The Uncontested Market — July 2026
Some searches are crowded. A role goes up, every agency in the niche sees it, and the race is on. This report is about the opposite corner of the market: senior roles that have been open for five months or more, at companies where no recruiter appears to be involved at all — nobody inside, nobody outside. The roles nobody is racing for.
Where the quiet searches are
Healthcare stands out: 58 companies, with a median of 290 days — nearly ten months. Media & social has the oldest quiet roles (median 309 days). The pattern holds across every sector we watch: once a senior search goes quiet, it tends to stay quiet for a very long time.
| Sector | Companies | Median days open |
|---|---|---|
| General / cross-sector | 102 | 256 |
| Healthcare | 58 | 290 |
| Fintech | 33 | 280 |
| Enterprise SaaS | 31 | 244 |
| AI & machine learning | 28 | 279 |
| Cloud infrastructure | 26 | 282 |
| Cybersecurity | 22 | 238 |
| Climate & energy | 14 | 284 |
| Media & social | 13 | 309 |
| E-commerce | 13 | 271 |
Why this matters
A senior seat that sits empty for nine months is not a paperwork delay. Someone inside that company is carrying the work, and the usual explanations — “we’re being picky,” “it’s a hard market” — wear thin long before day 273. For recruiters, these are the accounts where a call is welcome rather than one of twenty. For everyone else, it’s a corner of the labor market that job boards make invisible: the posting is technically live, but the search behind it has gone still.
Method, honestly
Subspace has discovered 385,372 company career boards and actively watches 62,735 of them — checking the public postings, on the company’s own site or applicant-tracking system, on a rolling basis. “Open 150+ days” uses the posting date the ATS itself reports. “No recruiter involved” means no recruiter or talent-acquisition posting appears anywhere on that company’s board. A role is only counted while it is verified live. Every figure on this page comes from queries run on July 9, 2026, cross-checked over two independent connections. This report is aggregate-only by design — we don’t name the companies here.
Company-level detail — which companies, which roles, and who to talk to — is what Subspace does. Access is currently invite-only — you can request an invite here.
